How to Use the Diaper Calculator

This calculator estimates how many diapers your baby needs and what they cost based on age. Here is how to use it:

  1. Enter your baby's age. Enter the age in months from 0 (newborn) through 35 months. You can use decimals for partial months.
  2. Enter cost per diaper. The default is $0.25, which is a typical cost for store-brand diapers bought in bulk. Name-brand diapers often cost $0.30-0.40 each. Wholesale club prices can be as low as $0.15-0.18 per diaper.
  3. Read your results. The calculator shows daily and monthly diaper use, monthly cost, and an annualized estimate based on current usage.

About the Diaper Calculator

Newborns go through the most diapers, typically 10-12 per day in the first month. This decreases steadily as babies get older: 6-8 per day by 3-6 months, and 4-6 per day by 12-18 months. During potty training around age 2-3, use drops to 2-4 per day. Most children are fully potty trained by age 3, though every child is different.

Average annual diaper cost ranges from about $700-$1,000 depending on the brand, store, and age of the child. Buying in bulk, using store brands, and switching to pull-ups during potty training can significantly reduce costs. Cloth diapers have a higher upfront cost but can reduce per-change costs dramatically over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many diapers does a newborn use per day?

Newborns typically use 10-12 diapers per day in the first month. This is because their stomachs are tiny and they feed frequently, resulting in frequent bowel movements. Breastfed newborns tend to have more frequent, looser stools than formula-fed babies. By 1-3 months, this drops to 8-10 per day as feeding becomes more regular.

What diaper size does a baby wear and for how long?

Newborn size fits babies up to about 10 lbs, typically for the first 1-4 weeks. Size 1 fits 8-14 lbs (1-4 months). Size 2 fits 12-18 lbs (3-8 months). Size 3 fits 16-28 lbs (5-24 months, the longest-used size). Size 4 fits 22-37 lbs. Size 5 fits 27+ lbs. Size 6 fits 35+ lbs. Many parents find size 3 lasts the longest, from about 5 months through potty training for smaller children.

How much do diapers cost per year in total?

From birth to potty training (approximately 2.5 years), the average child uses about 6,000-8,000 diapers. At $0.25 per diaper, that is $1,500-$2,000 total. At $0.35 per diaper for name brands, it is $2,100-$2,800. Buying in bulk at warehouse clubs can bring the cost down to $900-$1,200 over the entire diapering period. Cloth diapering can reduce lifetime costs to $500-$1,000 including washing.

When should I start potty training?

Most children show readiness for potty training between 18 and 24 months, though some are not ready until 3 years or later. Signs of readiness include staying dry for 2+ hours, showing interest in the toilet, being able to follow simple instructions, and expressing discomfort when wet or soiled. Starting before a child is ready often leads to more resistance and a longer training process.
