Planning how much cake to bake for a party or wedding? This calculator tells you exactly how many servings any cake will yield based on its shape, size, layers, and slice style:
- Select your pan shape. Choose Round, Square, Rectangle, or Sheet Cake. Round and square pans are measured by diameter or side length. Sheet cakes use standard bakery sizes.
- Choose your pan size. Select the pan size from the dropdown. If you are not sure of your pan size, measure across the top from inside edge to inside edge.
- Set the number of layers. A single-layer cake is 1 layer. A two-layer cake (two cake rounds stacked with frosting) is 2. Enter up to 6 layers for tiered cakes.
- Choose your slice type. Party slices are the standard roughly 1x2 inch slices used for most birthday parties. Wedding slices are narrower (1x2x4 inches tall) and are used for tall, multi-layer wedding cakes where the height is part of the serving.

About Cake Serving Sizes
Cake serving counts vary depending on who you ask, but the numbers here follow Wilton's widely used cake serving guide and standard bakery practice. Party servings assume a 4-inch-tall slice at 1x2 inches. Wedding servings assume a 4-inch-tall slice at 1x2 inches per layer, which is a smaller portion since the cake is often served alongside other desserts.
Common reference points: an 8-inch round single-layer cake yields 14 party servings. A 9x13 sheet cake yields 24 standard 2x2 inch pieces. A full sheet cake (26x18 inches) yields about 96 servings. For sheet cakes, the calculator always uses party slice sizing since sheet cakes are not typically cut in wedding style.

A standard 9x13 inch sheet cake yields approximately 24 servings when cut into 2x2 inch squares, or 12 servings if cut into larger 3x3 inch squares. A party slice is a generous piece, roughly 1 inch wide by 2 inches deep, cut from a standard 4-inch-tall cake. A wedding slice is a narrower piece, also 1 inch wide by 2 inches deep, but from a taller 4-inch (per layer) cake. Wedding slices are smaller by volume because wedding cakes are often tall multi-tier structures, and guests typically eat smaller portions at weddings since there are multiple courses. Wedding servings can yield 30-50% more slices from the same diameter cake than party slices.
How do I calculate servings for a tiered wedding cake?
Calculate each tier separately and add the servings together. For example, a three-tier round cake with a 6-inch top, 9-inch middle, and 12-inch bottom tier with wedding slices would yield approximately 12 + 32 + 56 = 100 servings.
