This calculator finds the right turkey weight for your gathering in seconds. Here is what each setting means:
- Enter your guest count. Include everyone who will be eating, including light eaters. The calculator rounds up to the nearest whole pound so you are never short.
- Choose your leftover preference. "Generous leftovers" uses 1 lb per person unstuffed (1.25 lb stuffed), which is the standard recommendation for most Thanksgiving meals where people expect to take home plates. "Minimal leftovers" uses 0.75 lb per person, appropriate when leftovers are not a priority or you have many side dishes.
- Stuffed or unstuffed. A stuffed turkey needs to be larger because the cavity is filled. The stuffing adds to total weight, so the formula increases the purchase size by 0.25 lb per person to ensure enough turkey meat after the stuffing is accounted for.

About the Turkey Size Calculator
The standard USDA recommendation is 1 pound of turkey per person, which accounts for bone weight, fat, and skin, yielding approximately 0.5-0.6 lbs of edible meat per guest. For a generous Thanksgiving spread with the expectation of leftovers, 1-1.25 lbs per person is the widely cited guideline from most culinary sources. The formula in this calculator follows those standards exactly.
Note that most grocery stores and butchers sell turkeys in increments of 2-4 lbs, so the actual bird you buy will likely be slightly larger than the calculated minimum. If you are serving a crowd larger than about 15-16 people, consider buying two smaller turkeys instead of one very large bird, as turkeys over 20 lbs can be difficult to cook evenly. Frequently Asked Questions
How big a turkey do I need for 10 people?
For 10 people with generous leftovers, buy a 10-12 lb turkey (1-1.25 lbs per person). For minimal leftovers, an 8 lb turkey will suffice. Most grocery stores carry turkeys in 2 lb increments, so you will likely buy a 10 or 12 lb bird. A 12 lb turkey gives you the best combination of manageable cooking time and enough meat for seconds and leftovers.
Is it better to buy one large turkey or two smaller ones?
For groups over 15-16 people, two smaller turkeys (12-14 lbs each) are often better than one large bird. Smaller turkeys cook more evenly, thaw faster, and fit more easily in standard ovens. Two turkeys also let you cook one on the grill or smoker for variety. The downside is the need for more oven space and more active cooking time. Two 14 lb turkeys serves 28 people with generous leftovers.
Does a stuffed turkey need to be bigger?
Yes. When you stuff a turkey, the stuffing takes up cavity space and adds to the total weight of the bird. To ensure you still have enough turkey meat, you need a larger bird. The general guideline is 1.25 lbs per person for a stuffed turkey versus 1 lb per person unstuffed. Keep in mind that stuffed turkeys also take longer to cook, as the stuffing must reach 165°F internally before the turkey is safe to eat.
How far in advance should I order a fresh turkey?
Fresh turkeys sell out quickly around Thanksgiving. Order or reserve your fresh turkey at least 1-2 weeks before the holiday, and confirm your pickup date with the butcher or grocery store. Fresh turkeys should be cooked within 1-2 days of purchase. If you are buying frozen, you can purchase weeks ahead and thaw in the refrigerator (24 hours per 4-5 lbs), so a 16 lb turkey needs about 4 days of refrigerator thawing.
