How to Use the Mohr's Circle Calculator

Enter stress state to compute Mohr's circle parameters.

  1. Enter normal and shear stresses.
  2. Read the result. Shows circle center, radius, principal stresses, and max shear.

About the Mohr's Circle Calculator

Mohr's circle is a graphical method for determining principal stresses, maximum shear stress, and stress on any arbitrary plane. The circle's center is the average normal stress and its radius gives the maximum shear stress. Points on the circle represent the stress state at different orientations of the material element.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Mohr's circle show?

It shows all possible stress states at a point as you rotate the element. The top and bottom of the circle give maximum shear, while the leftmost and rightmost points give principal stresses.

How is Mohr's circle radius calculated?

R = sqrt(((sx - sy)/2)^2 + txy^2). This radius equals the maximum in-plane shear stress.

Is Mohr's circle used in 3D?

3D Mohr's circle involves three circles representing the three pairs of principal stress planes, but the 2D version is most commonly used in practice.
