How to Use the Party Drink Calculator

Calculating drinks for a party requires knowing your guest count, how long the event runs, and what your guests prefer to drink. Here is how to get accurate estimates:

  1. Enter your guest count and event duration. The standard rule is 2 drinks in the first hour and 1 drink per hour after that. A 4-hour event means roughly 5 drinks per person.
  2. Adjust the drink mix. The defaults (50% beer, 25% wine, 25% cocktails) work for most mixed-crowd parties. Adjust if your crowd skews heavily toward one category. The percentages do not need to add to exactly 100, but keeping them close gives the most accurate results.
  3. Read the quantities. Beer shows in cases of 24. Wine shows in 750ml bottles (each holds about 5 glasses). Spirits show in 750ml bottles (each yields about 16 cocktails with 1.5 oz pours). Non-alcoholic drinks default to 2 per person total.

Ice is estimated at 1.5 lbs per person to cover both drink chilling and cooler packing. For hot-weather events, use the dedicated Party Ice Calculator for a more precise estimate.

About the Party Drink Calculator

The 2+1 rule (2 drinks the first hour, 1 per hour after) is the industry-standard estimate used by bar catering companies. It accounts for the typical pattern where guests drink more at the start of an event and moderate as the evening progresses. This rule works for typical social events with a mixed adult crowd.

Beer quantity uses 12 oz per serving in 24-unit cases. Wine uses 5 oz per glass (5 glasses per 750ml bottle). Spirits use 1.5 oz per cocktail (roughly 16 drinks per 750ml bottle). All quantities round up so you never run short. Non-alcoholic beverages at 2 per person cover guests who do not drink alcohol plus drivers and those who alternate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much alcohol do I need for 100 guests at a 4-hour party?

For 100 guests at a 4-hour party, plan on about 500 total drinks (2 in the first hour, 1 per hour after). With a 50/25/25 beer/wine/cocktail split: roughly 11 cases of beer (250 beers), 13 bottles of wine (50 glasses), and 8 bottles of spirits (125 cocktails). Add about 200 non-alcoholic drinks and 150 lbs of ice.

How many drinks per person at a 3-hour party?

Using the standard 2+1 rule, a 3-hour event means about 4 drinks per person (2 in the first hour, 1 each in hours 2 and 3). This is a planning estimate — actual consumption varies widely based on your crowd, the time of day, whether there is food, and individual preferences.

How many bottles of wine do I need for 50 guests?

If 25% of your 50 guests prefer wine at a 3-hour event (about 50 wine drinks total), you need about 10 bottles of wine (5 glasses per 750ml bottle). If your event is wine-focused and most guests drink wine, increase the wine percentage in the calculator and reduce beer and cocktails accordingly.

Should I buy more drinks than the calculator estimates?

A 10-15% buffer is reasonable for most events. Beer keeps well, so buying an extra case is low risk. Wine and spirits have long shelf lives, so overage is not wasted. The bigger risk is running out of a popular category mid-event, so round up on whatever your crowd prefers most. For a formal event with a cash bar, the caterer handles inventory risk.
