Enter each grading category from your syllabus, along with its weight and your score, to calculate your overall course grade.
- Set up your categories. Enter the name of each graded component: homework, quizzes, midterm, final exam, participation, projects, etc.
- Enter weights. Enter the percentage weight for each category as listed in your syllabus. Weights should add up to 100% for an accurate result.
- Enter your scores. Enter your current score in each category as a percentage (e.g., 87 for 87%).
- Read your grade. The weighted average updates instantly and shows your overall grade and letter grade.
If your weights do not add to 100%, the calculator normalizes them automatically. The Total Weight indicator turns green when your weights sum to exactly 100%.
About the Grade Calculator
Weighted grading means different assignments count for different proportions of your final grade. A course might weight homework at 20%, quizzes at 20%, a midterm at 25%, and a final exam at 35%. Your overall grade is not a simple average of all scores but rather a weighted average where each score is multiplied by its category weight before averaging.
For example, if you score 88% on homework (20%), 85% on quizzes (20%), 78% on the midterm (25%), and 82% on the final (35%): weighted grade = (88x20 + 85x20 + 78x25 + 82x35) / 100 = (1760 + 1700 + 1950 + 2870) / 100 = 8280 / 100 = 82.8%.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
The calculator normalizes the weights automatically by dividing each weight by the total weight. However, for the most accurate result, your weights should match your syllabus exactly and sum to 100%. The Total Weight indicator turns red when weights do not add to 100%, reminding you to check your entries.
How do I use this if I have not taken the final exam yet?
You can enter your current scores for completed work and use the Final Exam Grade Calculator separately to find what you need on the final. Alternatively, enter a hypothetical final exam score here to see what your overall grade would be. Try different scores to understand how the final affects your grade.
What are the letter grade cutoffs?
This calculator uses the standard plus/minus scale: A = 93-100%, A- = 90-92%, B+ = 87-89%, B = 83-86%, B- = 80-82%, C+ = 77-79%, C = 73-76%, C- = 70-72%, D+ = 67-69%, D = 63-66%, D- = 60-62%, F = below 60%. Your professor may use slightly different cutoffs, so always check your syllabus.
Can I calculate my grade if some scores are missing?
Yes. Simply omit the categories for work not yet completed, or remove their rows. The calculator will compute a weighted grade from whatever categories you enter. Just keep in mind the result reflects only the entered categories and does not account for future assignments. For a full-semester projection, estimate your expected scores on upcoming work.
