About the Test Grade Calculator

Your test score percentage equals the number of correct answers divided by the total questions, multiplied by 100. For example, 18 correct out of 20 total = 18/20 x 100 = 90%. The letter grade is then assigned based on the percentage: A = 93-100%, A- = 90-92%, B+ = 87-89%, B = 83-86%, B- = 80-82%, C+ = 77-79%, C = 73-76%, C- = 70-72%, D+ = 67-69%, D = 63-66%, D- = 60-62%, F = below 60%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage is a passing grade?

In most American schools and colleges, a passing grade is 60% or above (a D- or higher). Some courses, particularly in professional and graduate programs, require a higher minimum such as 70% (C) or 75% to consider the course passed. For courses in your major, many programs require a C or better (73%+). Always check your institution's specific requirements.

How do I calculate my grade if each question is worth different points?

Add up all the points you earned and enter that as your "correct" number, then enter the total possible points as your "total." For example, if you earned 87 out of 100 possible points on a test where questions varied in value, enter 87 correct and 100 total to get 87%.

How many questions can I miss to still get an A?

To earn an A (93%), you need to answer at least 93% of questions correctly. On a 20-question test, you can miss at most 1 question (19/20 = 95%). On a 50-question test, you can miss at most 3 questions (47/50 = 94%). On a 100-question test, you can miss at most 7 (93/100 = 93%). Adjust the numbers in the calculator to find the threshold for any test length.

Does this calculator work for homework or quiz grades too?

Yes. The calculator works for any scored assignment: tests, quizzes, homework, essays, or any other graded work where you know the points earned and total possible points. Enter points earned as "correct" and total possible as "total" to get your percentage and letter grade.
