How to Use the Belt Size Calculator

Finding your belt size is quick and straightforward:

  1. Measure your waist. Measure around the part of your waist where you wear your pants, not your natural waist. This is usually at or just below your navel. Use the same measurement you use for pants sizing.
  2. Select your unit. Choose inches or centimeters.
  3. Enter your waist measurement. The calculator adds 2 inches to get your belt size, which is the standard industry practice.

The resulting belt size is the length of the belt, measured from the buckle pin hole to the middle hole of five holes. Order the next even size up if your waist falls between sizes.

About Belt Sizing

Belt sizes are measured differently than pants sizes. A standard rule is that your belt size is your pants waist size plus 2 inches. This extra length ensures the belt reaches the middle hole (of five standard holes) when buckled. Belt holes are typically 1 inch apart, giving you 2 inches of adjustment in either direction from the middle hole.

EU belt sizes use centimeters and are typically the actual waist measurement, not the adjusted size. A US 34 belt corresponds approximately to an EU 85 (about 85 cm waist circumference where the belt sits). When buying online from European brands, use the EU size from this calculator for best results.

Frequently Asked Questions

If my pants are size 34, what belt size do I need?

If your pants are size 34, you generally need a size 36 belt. The standard rule is to add 2 inches to your pants size to get your belt size. This ensures the belt reaches the middle hole when buckled, giving you room to tighten or loosen as needed. However, if you are between sizes or your actual waist measurement differs from your pants size, measure your actual waist and add 2 inches for the most accurate result.

How do I measure my waist for a belt?

Measure around your body at the position where you wear your belt, which is usually at or just below the navel. If you wear pants lower on your hips, measure at that lower position. Wear the same type of clothing you would normally wear with the belt, as thick denim adds about 0.5 inches compared to measuring bare skin. Use a soft tape measure and keep it parallel to the floor.

How long should a belt be?

A properly sized belt should buckle at the middle hole of five holes, leaving two holes available for tightening and two for loosening. Most belts have holes spaced 1 inch apart, so the total adjustable range is 4 inches. The belt tip (the tail that goes through the loop after buckling) should extend 1 to 3 inches beyond the buckle. Belts that are too long and trail past the first loop look untidy.

What is the difference between men's and women's belt sizing?

Belt sizing follows the same waist-plus-2-inch rule for both men and women. However, women's belts often have more holes (7 or 9) and are shorter in total length since women's waist sizes are generally smaller. Women's belts designed to wear at the natural waist (above the hips) require a smaller size than hip belts. If wearing a wide belt as a fashion statement at the natural waist, measure at that higher position rather than the pants line.
