How to Use the Dress Size Calculator

Accurate dress sizing requires three measurements. Here is how to take them correctly:

  1. Bust. Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape parallel to the ground. Do not compress your chest.
  2. Waist. Measure around the narrowest part of your torso, typically 1 inch above your navel. Breathe out normally before reading the tape.
  3. Hip. Measure around the fullest part of your hips, usually 7-9 inches below your waist.

The calculator uses your bust as the primary sizing factor, with waist and hip as secondary guides. Enter measurements in inches or centimeters.

About Women's Dress Sizing

Women's clothing sizes vary widely between countries and brands. In the US, even-numbered sizes run from 0 to 22+. UK sizes run 4 higher than US (a US 8 is a UK 12). EU sizes run 28 higher than US (a US 8 is an EU 36). These are based on industry standard measurements but vary significantly between brands, which may size small, large, or use vanity sizing.

This calculator provides a starting point. When shopping online, always check the specific brand's size chart measurements, as a size 8 from one brand may measure the same as a size 10 from another.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a US size 8 in UK and EU?

A US women's dress size 8 corresponds to a UK size 12 and an EU size 36. The UK system runs 4 sizes higher than US, and the EU system runs 28 sizes higher than US. These conversions are based on standard sizing charts, though actual fit varies between brands and styles.

Which measurement matters most for dress sizing?

For most structured dresses and tops, the bust measurement is the primary sizing factor. For bottoms like skirts and pants, the hip and waist measurements matter most. When your measurements fall into different size ranges for each body area, it is usually better to buy for the largest measurement and have it tailored, or look for brands that offer separate sizing by body area.

What is a size 0 in centimeters?

A US women's size 0 typically corresponds to a bust of approximately 32 inches (81 cm), waist of 24 inches (61 cm), and hip of 34 inches (86 cm). The UK equivalent is size 4, and the EU equivalent is approximately size 28-30. These measurements are industry standards and may not match every brand's definition of size 0.

Why do clothing sizes differ so much between brands?

Clothing brands set their own size standards and often use vanity sizing, where the labeled size is smaller than the actual measurement to make customers feel good about their size. Brands targeting different demographics also cut clothes differently. Fast fashion brands may size differently from luxury brands, and athletic wear uses different sizing than formal wear. Always measure yourself and compare to the specific brand's size chart for the best fit.
