How to Use the Simplify Fraction Calculator

Enter a fraction and the calculator instantly reduces it to the simplest form. It shows the GCD used, the decimal equivalent, and the simplification steps.

  1. Enter the numerator. Type the top number of your fraction.
  2. Enter the denominator. Type the bottom number. It cannot be zero.
  3. Read the result. The simplified fraction appears along with the GCD, decimal value, and a description of the simplification steps.

For example, entering 24/36 produces 2/3 because the GCD of 24 and 36 is 12. Dividing both by 12 gives the simplest form.

About Simplifying Fractions

Simplifying (or reducing) a fraction means dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD) until no common factor other than 1 remains. A fraction in simplest form is easier to understand and compare with other fractions. The process does not change the value of the fraction, only its representation.

The GCD is found using the Euclidean algorithm, which repeatedly divides the larger number by the smaller and takes the remainder until reaching zero. This is efficient even for very large numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you simplify a fraction?

Find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by it. For example, 24/36: GCD is 12, so 24/12 = 2 and 36/12 = 3, giving 2/3.

How do I know if a fraction is already in simplest form?

A fraction is in simplest form when the GCD of its numerator and denominator is 1. This means they share no common factors. For example, 3/7 is already simplified because 3 and 7 share no factors.

Does simplifying a fraction change its value?

No. Simplifying divides both numerator and denominator by the same number, which is equivalent to dividing by 1. The fraction 24/36 and 2/3 represent exactly the same value (0.6667).
