How to Use the Cross Stitch Size Calculator

This calculator converts your pattern's stitch count into real-world inches so you know exactly what fabric to buy. Here is how to use it:

  1. Find your stitch count. Check your pattern — it will list the width and height in stitches. This is often shown on the chart or in the pattern instructions.
  2. Select your fabric count. Aida 14 is the most popular choice for beginners. Higher counts (18, 22, 28) produce a finer, smaller design. Lower counts (11) produce a larger, bolder design.
  3. Read your finished dimensions. These are the dimensions of the stitched design only. The calculator also shows the fabric dimensions you need to buy, which adds 3" on each side for borders, framing, or finishing.

The 3" border on each side gives you enough unstitched fabric to properly frame, mount, or finish your piece. For large projects that will be professionally framed, you may want to add even more border.

About the Cross Stitch Size Calculator

The finished size formula is straightforward: divide the stitch count by the fabric count. A 100-stitch wide design on 14-count Aida produces a 100 ÷ 14 = 7.14" wide finished piece. For 28-count evenweave stitched over two threads, the effective count is 14 (28 ÷ 2), so the same 100-stitch design also produces a 7.14" finished width. The calculator adds 6" to each dimension (3" per side) for the recommended working border. This border is especially important when using a scroll frame or lap stand, which requires extra fabric to grip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fabric count should a beginner use for cross stitch?

Beginners typically start with 14-count Aida fabric. The 14-count weave produces squares that are easy to see and thread the needle through without magnification. It is widely available, affordable, and compatible with the vast majority of cross stitch patterns. Once you are comfortable with 14-count, you can move to 18-count for finer detail or try evenweave fabric for different effects.

How do I calculate how big my cross stitch will be?

Divide the stitch count by the fabric count. For example, a design that is 140 stitches wide on 14-count Aida will be 140 ÷ 14 = 10 inches wide. On 18-count Aida, the same 140 stitches produces a 7.78" wide design. On 11-count Aida, it produces a 12.73" wide design. This calculator does the math instantly so you can compare sizes before buying fabric.

How much border fabric do I need around my cross stitch design?

The standard recommendation is 3 inches of unstitched fabric on each side of the design. This gives you enough fabric to hold in a hoop without stitching too close to the edge, and enough to fold behind the frame if you are mounting the piece. For professional framing, 3 to 4 inches per side is standard. For a simple hoop display, 2 inches on each side may be sufficient for smaller pieces.

What is the difference between Aida fabric and evenweave?

Aida fabric has a woven grid structure with distinct squares, making it easy to count and stitch on. Each square is one stitch. Evenweave fabric (like linen or Jobelan) has a finer, more uniform weave. Cross stitches are typically worked over two threads of evenweave, which means 28-count evenweave produces the same stitch size as 14-count Aida. Evenweave gives a more elegant, softer finish but requires more counting experience.
