How to Use the F-Statistic Calculator

Enter two variances (or mean squares) and their degrees of freedom. The F-statistic is the ratio of the larger variance to the smaller. The calculator computes the F-ratio and its p-value.

About This Calculator

The F-statistic is the ratio of two variances. In ANOVA, it compares between-group variance to within-group variance. In regression, it tests overall model significance. A large F-value indicates that the variance explained by the model is significantly larger than unexplained variance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an F-statistic of 1 mean?

An F of 1 means the two variances are equal. Values much larger than 1 suggest the numerator variance is significantly larger.

Can the F-statistic be less than 1?

Yes, but by convention the larger variance is usually placed in the numerator. An F less than 1 means the denominator variance is larger.

How is F related to t?

For comparing two groups, F = t-squared. The F-test with df1=1 is equivalent to a two-tailed t-test.
