How to Use the Weighted Average Calculator

Enter your values in the first box and corresponding weights in the second, separated by commas or spaces. Each value must have a matching weight. The calculator computes the weighted mean: sum(value * weight) / sum(weights). Results appear instantly as you type.

Common uses include calculating GPA (grades weighted by credit hours), portfolio returns weighted by allocation, or composite scores weighted by importance.

About Weighted Average

A weighted average gives more influence to certain values based on their importance or frequency. Unlike a simple average where every value counts equally, a weighted average multiplies each value by its weight before summing. This is essential when data points contribute unequally, such as exam scores worth different percentages of a final grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my GPA using weighted average?

Enter your grade point for each class as values (e.g., 4.0, 3.7, 3.0) and the credit hours as weights (e.g., 3, 4, 3). The weighted average gives your GPA.

Do the weights need to add up to 100?

No. The calculator divides by the sum of weights, so any scale works. Weights of 1, 2, 3 give the same result as 10, 20, 30. Only the relative proportions matter.

What happens if I enter different numbers of values and weights?

The calculator requires the same number of values and weights. If they do not match, no result will be shown. Make sure each value has exactly one corresponding weight.
